A Ninth Grader Drinks Excessively With His Classmates, Experiences An Alcohol Overdose, And Finds Out That Listening In Class Can Change Your Life

Andy was a ninth grader who usually seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had a risk taking personality and regularly wanted to do what his older brothers were doing to have fun. The essential glitch with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were therefore within their legal rights to drive a vehicle and to drink alcohol.

Andy, then again, had a hard time accepting the actuality that as a fifteen-year-old adolescent he should not be drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, however, Andy regularly drank with his buddies after school, particularly on the weekends.

One weekend, Andy decided to drive around with some of his older pals. One of his guy friends was old enough to purchase alcohol. After purchasing some wine coolers, wine, and beer, Andy and all of the guys went to a park and drank for around two hours.

After drinking around nine alcoholic beverages, Andy started to feel queasy and then vomited. When he became unconscious on the baseball field, one of his buddies called 911 for assistance. It was fortunate that the call for medical assistance was made because when his cronies went to the hospital to see Andy, they discovered that Andy had been going through alcohol poisoning symptoms. Simply put, Andy had suffered through an alcohol overdose.

After receiving alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was actually surprised to learn that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had around five or ten alcoholic beverages. When he told this to the attending healthcare practitioner at the hospital, on the other hand, the healthcare practitioner told Andy that drinking five or ten bottles of beer over a two or three hour period of time could in reality be substantially more alcohol than can be metabolized by the body. The doctor further articulated how excessive alcohol can cause the brain to shut down an individual's respiratory system and that when this happens, a person can expire.

This was the first sign to Andy that he was drinking in a risky manner and that there are repercussions for such activities. The healthcare practitioner told Andy that he was a lucky young man because he almost died from an alcohol overdose the night before.

The healthcare practitioner also conversed with Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol treatment for Andy. His parents were delighted that Andy was out of harm's way and told the physician that they would follow through on getting Andy alcohol therapy.

While talking to his parents, Andy notified them that there must be a good reason why he did not expire and that he felt a sense of thankfulness that he was still alive. He also notified his parents that the strangest part about the entire drinking situation was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the past week at school.

At the time, what his health teacher, Mr. Johnson, was articulating didn't seem to make too much sense to Andy. Due to the fact that he almost died, then again, he felt that he should have listened more closely in class and applied what he had learned to his personal life.

Andy told his parents that he couldn't wait to go to school and make an apology to Mr. Johnson for not paying more attention to a subject that was as relevant as learning about alcohol poisoning.
